Had everything gone to plan, Liverpool would be entering their tenth season under consecutive management this term.

The Reds had never expected to be in the position to have to replace Jurgen Klopp in 2024.

The former Liverpool manager was supposed to be in place at Anfield for at least two more years. Klopp should not have had to worry about finding himself a new work place for a little while yet.

But after the 57-year-old grew exhausted with the demands of the job at Liverpool, he has found himself out of work since the summer.

In the meantime, Liverpool have moved on brilliantly. While the sadness of Klopp’s premature exit does still linger, Arne Slot has done a superb job at stamping his mark on the Liverpool squad.

With Slot making him proud back on Merseyside, it has been announced that Klopp has got a new job with Red Bull. But after giving up the reigns at Anfield earlier than planned, has the German just tainted his Liverpool legacy?

Jurgen Klopp accused of ‘destroying legacy’

When Klopp left Liverpool he made it clear that he did not want or intend to take over at a new club for at least a year.

While that was a relief for supporters at the time, you could understand some now feeling ever so slightly disappointed that Klopp has taken a new position relatively soon after declaring himself to be totally burned out.

Despite that, most Liverpool fans will be of the mind that Jurgen owes them nothing more and will be pleased to see him excited about working again.

The mood in Germany appears to be quite different, however. It has been reported that Borussia Dortmund fans are furious with Klopp for taking a job with Red Bull and speaking to TalkSPORT, German reporter Constantin Eckner has backed this up.

“A lot of members of the media and fans are thinking that Jurgen Klopp is destroying his legacy,” says Eckner.

“He was the head coach of Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, Dortmund have always positioned themselves as the antithesis against clubs like RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim.

“So, especially Borussia Dortmund fans but also a lot of football fans in general are not only annoyed, they are actually somewhat angry.”

Danny Murphy gives Jurgen Klopp verdict

It is understandable that having very much felt that Klopp was one of them, fans of Dortmund and perhaps Mainz too are upset with their former manager.

From a Reds point of view, though, this does nothing to change the feeling towards one of the most revered figures in Liverpool’s history.

That’s something that Danny Murphy agrees with, pointing out to Eckner that nobody in Liverpool will likely have thought twice about the Red Bull problem.

“Although you say he’s destroying his legacy, Constantin, it doesn’t matter what he does, at Liverpool he’ll never destroy his legacy,” says Murphy.

“So, he’s fine there, even if the Dortmund people are a little bit miffed.”
