'Absolutely': £87m player suggests he's expecting to work with Liverpool boss Arne Slot in the future

Liverpool could find themselves in the market for a new centre-forward during 2025.
There are several areas of the Liverpool squad which fans would like to see strengthened as their push for a Premier League title continues, with striker emerging as a real priority.
Heading into the campaign, perhaps that wasn’t the case. However, in the months since it has become clear that Liverpool are lacking a reliable, central goal-getter.
Diogo Jota was the initial pick to lead the line for Arne Slot but, as ever, the Portuguese has not been able to stay fit.
Meanwhile, Darwin Nunez’s poor form has meant Luis Diaz being shifted into an unnatural, but effective, central position.
With Nunez now likely to be sold, Liverpool are looking to the market. And as they do, Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez has just dropped an interesting hint about his future.
Santiago Gimenez expects Arne Slot reunion
Gimenez was excellent as Slot’s primary goal scorer at Feyenoord. The 23-year-old scored 49 goals in 86 games under the now Liverpool head coach.
As a result, there were reports last summer that Feyenoord had slapped a huge £87m asking-price on Gimenez.
Inevitably Liverpool were reportedly interested in Gimenez, but no move ever came in from Slot’s new employers.
Now, with the Mexican having hit 10 goals in just 14 appearances this season, he has spoken out about potentially reuniting with his former coach in the future.

“Football is always about the same familiar faces and that is the beauty of football; leaving a mark, friendships all over the world, to meet again, greet each other and see each other again,” Gimenez told Fox Sports Mexico when asked about Slot.
“Since I was a child, I always wanted to be in one of the five best leagues in the world,” he added. “And one of those includes Spain, the Premier League or Italy . I don’t have a preference for any of them and I would like to play in all of them, why not?”
Could Liverpool move for Gimenez?
Given Liverpool’s slight struggles at centre-forward and Gimenez’s history under Slot, this is an easy link to make.
Indeed, the Mexico international would also fit the kind of profile in which Liverpool usually look for in the transfer market.
Season | Apperances | Goals | Assists |
2022/23* | 45 | 23 | 2 |
2023/24* | 41 | 26 | 8 |
2024/25 | 14 | 10 | 3 |
23, and already with well over 200 senior appearances under his belt, Gimenez looks ready for the next chapter of his career.
Feyenoord’s valuation would obviously have to come down quite considerably for this to happen, but it seems unlikely they’d ever get the full £87m for Gimenez anyway.
We’re not sure there’s real legs in this but it’s certainly one to be aware of.
