Liverpool got yet another win this weekend and sit top of the Premier League table after eight games and there’s now serious talk of if they can challenge for the title.

The Reds saw off Chelsea to get a tough run of fixtures started in the best possible way.

Following the win, Alan Shearer has been among those to suggest Liverpool are now firmly involved in the title picture.

Of course, there is a long way to go in terms of the full season and with the likes of Arsenal and Aston Villa to come in the coming weeks, Liverpool have questions to answer.

And discussing the Reds’ potential title bid himself, pundit Chris Sutton has suggested that the time hasn’t quite come to say yes or no to Liverpool’s title credentials.

Chris Sutton makes comment on Liverpool’s title hopes after beating Chelsea

Speaking on the latest episode of the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, Sutton was asked by Ian Ladyman if he feels Liverpool are now Man City’s closest title challengers.

And answering the question, Sutton suggested the question might be better asked next week.

“You’ve gone straight in there! Erm…I’m not sitting on the fence but aren’t we better to ask that question next week after Liverpool play Arsenal?,” Sutton said.

“I think that just in terms of Liverpool’s start to the season, they have surprised me. Surprised me because I didn’t see them showing this consistency under Arne Slot playing a slightly different way.

“But everyone’s looking at this group of games now, tougher fixtures, think they’ve got Arsenal, Brighton and Villa, and that will be a better time to judge.

“But they’re absolutely motoring, and you have to take your hat off to Arne Slot.”

Liverpool can challenge but need to be faultless

The Reds could really have done with the VAR being on their side this weekend at Wolves but instead, we sat back and saw City get a crucial decision go their way.

As we know from recent seasons, any sort of slip up is normally punished by City, who are usually relentless in their pursuit of the title.

For Liverpool to win the entire thing, the Reds basically need to go the entire season and only lose a few games max.

And given the home loss to Nottingham Forest already, it doesn’t leave much room for error.

Still, the Reds can challenge and on current form, there’s no reason why the team can’t at least push Arsenal and City right into the final few weeks at the very least.
