Liverpool lead the way in the Premier League after their strong start to life under Arne Slot.

The Reds have just once in the league since the Dutchman replaced Jurgen Klopp at the helm and have a four-point lead over second-place Arsenal while also having a game in hand.

Liverpool can increase that gap to seven if they beat Everton in the Merseyside derby next month, but it goes without saying that other teams are breathing down their necks.

Arsenal’s exploits need no introduction, while Nottingham Forest showed they are right up there with a spirited performance in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

And now, Alan Shearer has shared whether Newcastle United can position themselves for a Premier League title challenge amid their stunning run of form in recent weeks.

Liverpool have won just three of their last seven games in the Premier League and were held once again by Forest, who also won the reserve fixture at Anfield in September.

Newcastle United, on the other hand, have been one of the most in-form teams in the Premier League over the past month, having won each of their last five games in the competition.

Eddie Howe’s side clicked into gear during the festive period and look hard to beat, while in attack, the irrepressible Alexander Isak has led the way with his stunning goalscoring exploits.

Shearer believes his former team can give Liverpool – and the other teams – a run for the money at the top, with the Magpies currently nine points behind the league leaders.

He said via BBC MOTD: "The form they’re in, the way they’re looking – defensively solid, clean sheets. Midfield – there’s no doubt they’ve got the system going, and with [Isak] up front, they’ve got a chance."

Newcastle United shouldn’t be written off

Steve Nicol feels Liverpool are still favourites for the Premier League title despite their recent run in the competition.

However, teams around them are slowly clicking into gear, with Arsenal, in particular, just four points behind the Reds as things stand.

Newcastle are in fine form and have a favourable run of games coming up. Stranger things have happened in football than the Magpies challenging for the title, so it would be foolish to rule them out at this stage of the season.

That said, Liverpool have a healthy lead at the top and don’t really have to focus on other teams as long as they start winning games again.
