Alphonso Davies may be about to give Liverpool hope that Trent Alexander-Arnold will stay - opinion

Liverpool were dealt a potential transfer blow on Wednesday with news emerging that Alphonso Davies may be about to extend his stay with Bayern Munich.
The Reds were seemingly interested in signing Davies on a free transfer when his Bayern contract expired at the end of the season.
In reality, Liverpool moving for the 24-year-old always felt a little unlikely. Davies was being courted by Real Madrid and it seemed as though that’s where he was headed.
However, reports from Germany now suggest that Davies will sign a new contract instead.
While a small blow to Liverpool, the Canadian’s extension at Bayern could actually end up being good news for the Reds.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold in an identical position to Davies – and also being targeted by Madrid – Liverpool fans should take note of what the Spanish press initially said about Davies joining Los Blancos.
Spanish press set to be proven wrong on Alphonso Davies
Alexander-Arnold’s flirtation with Real Madrid has really started to come to a head since the turn of the year.
A big reason for that has been the confidence in the Spanish papers that a deal will be done for the Liverpool academy graduate.
Madrid based outlet Marca have been especially bullish, regularly proclaiming the negotiations to sign Alexander-Arnold as being virtually complete.
Interestingly, Marca also ran a scoop in the middle of November to declare that Real Madrid had reached an agreement with Davies for the summer.
This has been a similar story with Alexander-Arnold. Earlier this month, Marca claimed that an agreement between Real and Trent was ‘more than on track.’
With everything still quiet on the side of Liverpool and their right-back, Davies’ breakthrough with Bayern should lend huge encouragement to supporters that this was just a load of hot air all along.
Hope returns for Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold
While the Spanish press look likely to have been wrong in the case of Davies, that is not yet confirmed just yet.
Similarly, Liverpool should not relax in terms of Alexander-Arnold. Until he signs on the dotted line that nervousness will remain.
But after such a poor performance against Man United on Sunday, Alexander-Arnold looked like a man with a point to prove during Wednesday’s defeat at Tottenham.
If there had been almost resignation that he was going after the weekend, the fire should now return to Liverpool fans that they haven’t lost their right-back just yet.
This all could mean nothing in the long run and Davies and Trent are different people, Liverpool also really do need a final decision from Alexander-Arnold soon. But from the bleakness of Sunday, hope should be shooting through that the No.66 is sticking around.
