'Apparently': Troy Deeney shares what a Premier League referee texted him about Lucas Bergvall incident

Liverpool have it all to do in the second leg at Anfield as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the semifinal of the Carabao Cup.
The Reds weren’t at their brilliant best but had a few chances to score, although they failed to make it count on the night.
While it looked like the game was headed towards a stalemate, Lucas Bergvall scored the winner with just five minutes left on the clock after latching on to a pass from Dominic Solanke.
A lot was said about Bergvall as there were claims that he should have never been on the pitch to score the winner.
And now, Troy Deeney has shared what a Premier League referee told him about the incident involving the young midfielder.
Liverpool told Lucas Bergvall didn’t deserve to be sent off
Bergvall took centre stage in North London as he picked up a first yellow card for a foul on Luis Diaz.
Later in the game, he lunged into Kostas Tsimikas and was expected to receive his marching orders, but the referee waived play on as the Greek international went off the pitch to receive treatment.

While Tsimikas was off the pitch, Tottenham made their man advantage count as Bergvall rubbed salt into the wounds of Liverpool by scoring the late winner himself.
In the aftermath of the incident, Slot was spotted fuming at the referee, while Virgil van Dijk claimed Bergvall should have got a red card for Tottenham.
Deeney, however, claims it was within the letter of the law for Bergvall to remain on the pitch as he shared what a Premier League referee told him about the incident.
"I just texted a referee friend of mine who works in the Premier League and he said exactly what Ange said word for word,” said Deeney on CBS Sport.
“Apparently now, if that tackle happens, the referee can play it on and it only goes back to being a yellow card if he deems it to be a reckless foul.
“Not a late tackle like we've just seen, but a reckless, dangerous tackle. Then they can go back and yellow card him."
What did Ange Postecoglou say about the incident?
As Deeney rightly pointed out, Postecoglou said Bergvall could have only been penalised at the time if he was deemed to have made a dangerous tackle worthy of a second yellow card.

“We’ve been told consistently that if we play advantage, as long as it’s not a cynical foul, then the player does not get cautioned,” said Postecoglou in his post-match press conference.
“So that’s been relayed to us on a weekly basis. Because we feel like that’s been happening. That’s one of the things I was bemoaning last weekend.
