There has been a lot of talk over the left-back situation at Liverpool this season.

Since his arrival over the summer, Arne Slot has not quite landed on who he wants to play on the left side of his defence just yet.

Over the previous seven years, that question has hardly needed much thought at all; Andy Robertson has barely missed a beat for Liverpool.

The Scotland captain has won it all with the Reds, earning a reputation as one of the best full-backs in the game and an indisputable Liverpool legend.

But as rumours grow that Liverpool are looking to replace Robertson, some have begun to speak about the 30-year-old in the past tense at Anfield.

It will be a sad day when Robertson does eventually leave the club. But in the meantime, he has already secured his place in the conversation amongst the best left-backs in football history.

Roberto Carlos names best left-back in football history

Alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold on the other side, Robertson redefined the way full-backs are looked at during his early years at Liverpool.

The way the two attacked in unison and very much worked as a pair harked back to the great Brazilian duo of Cafu and Roberto Carlos.

As perhaps the greatest left-back the world has ever seen, Carlos is well placed to give his views on all matters relating to the position.

So, when asked by GOAL to pick between various legendary left-backs, it was interesting to see who the Real Madrid legend went for.

First out of the hat was fellow Brazilian Marcelo, who Carlos was asked to put head-to-head against Robertson.

“Ay caramba!” the World Cup winner exclaimed, before picking Marcelo over the Liverpool man.

Knocked out at the first hurdle, Robertson joined Ashely Cole, Patrice Evra and Jordi Alba, who lost out to David Alaba, Paolo Maldini and Carlos himself respectively. The final eventually saw Marcelo pitted against Maldini, with Carlos giving the great Italian the nod.

Will Andy Robertson start against Southampton?

While there is a wider picture forming over Robertson’s time at Liverpool, in the here and now he will be focused on making the most out of this season.

Having scored a late, late winner for Scotland against Poland on Monday, Robertson’s confidence will be up as he returns to the Liverpool training ground.

However, there were also claims that Robertson picked up a slight knock while playing for his country.

As a result, we’d expect that Slot will pick Kostas Tsimikas to face Southampton on Sunday.

Robertson undoubtedly deserves his place in this conversation, but the unfortunate truth is that his powers are no longer what they once were.
