Liverpool made some interesting decisions during their first summer with Arne Slot at the helm.

The Reds had been expected to allow their new head coach to put his own stamp on the team with some activity in the transfer window.

But although only Federico Chiesa arrived fresh and new into the Liverpool squad, Slot still managed to make an impact in other ways.

One of those ways was to allow the departure of highly-rated young midfielder Bobby Clark.

Clark had done well at Liverpool after breaking through under Jurgen Klopp, but Slot made the call to sell the 19-year-old to RB Salzburg for around £10m.

Clark joined up with former Reds assistant manager Pep Lijnders in Austria, but after Lijnders was sacked on Monday, things have turned sour. Taking to Instagram later in the day, Clark gave his own reaction to the news.

Bobby Clark thanks Pep Lijnders after sacking

Clark turned out to be a really good signing for the Liverpool academy after arriving from Newcastle in 2021.

His most impressive turn came earlier this year when the teenager really stood up to be counted during the Carabao Cup final.

Given Liverpool’s slight dearth of midfielders, many had expected Clark to kick on again in 2024/25.

Nevertheless, Lijnders was desperate to sign Clark and in the end the Reds probably saw a £10m transfer as being too good to turn down.

But things haven’t really gone to plan for the Geordie at Salzburg. He has made only five starts in the Bundesliga and with Lijnders now sacked, he must be wondering how his future looks.

In the meantime, Clark took to his Instagram stories on Monday to thank Lijnders and wish him well for the future. “Good luck in the future. Thank you for your trust in me,” he wrote, alongside a black and white picture of the two of them.

What next for Bobby Clark?

Despite the sacking of Lijnders, it’s still clear that Clark could have a future at Salzburg.

The Austrian club are one of the best clubs for youth development in world football and the former Reds youngster is a talent.

However, given the rocky nature of his first six months in the Bundesliga, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Clark was now looking for a way out.

Bobby’s father, former footballer Lee, claimed that he would love to see Clark play for boyhood club Newcastle at some point during his career.

Perhaps the Toon will be monitoring these latest developments with a special interest.

Clark can still turn things around for sure, but the loss of a real ally as his manager is clearly a bitter pill to swallow.
