Diogo Jota was Liverpool’s saviour once again on Tuesday night.

The Portuguese striker came off of the bench against Nottingham Forest with 66 minutes on the clock to head in the equaliser at the City Ground with his first touch of the ball, leaving many to praise Arne Slot for his tactical masterclass.

The action highlighted once again the Portuguese star’s lethal instincts in front of goal as the 28-year-old has established himself at Anfield as the Reds’ best finisher over recent seasons.

Since returning from a muscle injury, Jota has now scored three goals in six Premier League appearances, despite not starting in any of the games.

Slot will hope he can keep the injury-prone star fit for the remainder of the campaign as the Portuguese international consistently shows his worth and his Nottingham Forest goal has helped the 28-year-old surpass a Reds legend in the goalscoring chart at Anfield.

Diogo Jota overtakes John Aldridge in Liverpool’s all-time goalscoring chart

Jota’s goal against Nottingham Forest saw the forward take his total for the 2024/25 campaign to eight goals and two assists across 19 appearances.

On the all-time list of Reds goalscorers, the 28-year-old’s total of 49 goals sees him come in 39th place in the standings, with his latest strike helping him surpass club legend John Aldridge.

Aldo scored 63 goals across 104 appearances for Liverpool and Jota will now have his sights set on others further up the list with names such as Steve McManaman, Daniel Sturridge, Dirk Kuyt and Ronnie Whelan all within range.

Where does Diogo Jota rank amongst Liverpool’s best goalscorers?

Having now taken position 39 on Liverpool’s all-time list of goalscorers, with two years left on his current Reds deal and with the potential to score 15-plus goals a season, Jota will have his eye on Luis Suarez’s position in 22nd with the Uruguayan netting 82 times while on Merseyside.

How Diogo Jota compares to Liverpool’s best goalscorers

Jota has incredible finishing ability with both his head and feet, but his biggest issue at Liverpool has always been his fitness.

It has been incredible to witness what Jota is doing at Anfield given his injury problems and the stop-start nature of his career on Merseyside.

Should he get on top of this, Slot will have a lethal weapon to help fire his team to trophies over the next two seasons, which will lead to more landmarks being reached.
