With each passing day, Trent Alexander-Arnold is edging closer to leaving Liverpool and Real Madrid continue to intensify their interest.

With his contract set to expire next summer, the 26-year-old is free to hold talks with potential suitors and sign a pre-contract agreement, with a view to a summer transfer.

However, it appears as if Real Madrid are wasting no time as they made an official offer to snap him up in January.

Liverpool swiftly rejected the bid, but Jamie Carragher is clearly not a big fan of the right-back as Los Blancos continue to wait patiently on the wings.

Real Madrid’s interest in Alexander-Arnold is well-documented, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side courting him for over a year now.

Jude Bellingham’s move to the Santiago Bernabeu has added another dimension to the transfer, with the England international one of Trent’s best pals in the game.

Liverpool have made their stance clear that Alexander-Arnold will not be sold in January, but there is a feeling among the Anfield faithful that he will move to Spain at the end of the season.

With the Reds involved in the Premier League title race, Carragher feels this is a distraction they can do without as he took a dig at Alexander-Arnold and his camp.

“The most important thing for @LFC in 2025 is winning the #PremierLeague. No one's contract or future should come in the way of that!

“I love Trent as a lad & a player, but his team would've told Real Madrid to bid & also would've known LFC would turn it down.

“It's to try & cover themselves when he leaves for free. Again it's something the club/fans don't need with a huge game coming up.”

Who can replace Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool?

Liverpool remain in talks to extend his contract, but with Real Madrid firming up their interest with an official offer, it looks like this is a battle the Reds will eventually come out second best in.

Conor Bradley is already at the club and could be given a chance to stake his claim if Alexander-Arnold moves on, with the young defender already showing his class at Anfield so far.

In terms of potential new faces, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with a move to Liverpool as he continues to impress for Xabi Alonso’s side.

That said, the Reds need the Alexander-Arnold saga to finish one way or another in the coming weeks so that they can focus on the rest of the season and plan for the future.
