Liverpool secured their spot in the Last-16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win over Lille.

It proved to be a tricky night for Arne Slot’s men at Anfield as the Ligue 1 outfit were very organised and their discipline created problems for the Premier League club from a creative point of view, especially in the first half.

However, with 34 minutes on the clock, Mohamed Salah would break the deadlock with a finish typical of the Egyptian superstar. After Lille pulled a goal back, Harvey Elliott would go on to score the winner, keeping Liverpool on top of the Champions League table.

In the Anfield tunnel post-match, it was not hard to see how close the duo are as teammates and the 21-year-old was shocked when the superstar asked him a certain question.

A broken foot for Elliott at the start of the season meant he would always be playing catch-up throughout the 2024/25 campaign when it came to impressing Slot.

This has resulted in the midfielder being linked with a move away from Merseyside with both Brighton and Borussia Dortmund showing interest in Elliott this month.

The 21-year-old’s goal against Lille was only his second of the season and he was delighted when asked by Salah to take part in his post-match photo.

The Egyptian star traditionally takes a picture after every Liverpool game with the goalscorers, with Elliott responding to the winger’s request with “Finally, I’m allowed?”

Speaking to Amazon Prime after the Lille clash, Salah was full of praise for Elliott and shared what he liked most about his performance against Lille.

The winger stated: "He was injured at the beginning of the season and when he came back it was tough with the guys in midfield, but I'm happy for him and to always help him. He's a great lad and always tries to give his best, even if it's five minutes or 45 minutes today, I'm happy for him."

Fans of the Reds will hope the youngster can kick on after his last two outings, although a loan move could be very beneficial for the English talent.

Harvey Elliott should take his chances by securing a loan move

Under Jurgen Klopp, Elliott’s importance to the former Liverpool coach was undeniable as the midfielder started in five out of the German’s last six Premier League matches last season.

The 21-year-old’s broken foot has resulted in the player getting fewer opportunities under Slot but since he has returned to full fitness, the Dutch has still opted to use him from the bench.

Elliott has received just 292 minutes of action during the current campaign and given his age, the former Fulham star needs more to develop further.

Slot recently hinted that Elliott could be the long-term replacement for Salah when the winger eventually leaves Anfield and spending some time at either Brighton or Borussia Dortmund, could go a long way in preparing the 21-year-old for the potential outcome.
