In recent years, a handful of notable former Liverpool players have successfully transitioned into management after hanging up their boots.
Steven Gerrard was at Rangers and Aston Villa before moving to the Saudi Pro League to become Al-Ettifaq’s head coach, with former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum currently serving as his captain.
Xabi Alonso, on the other hand, is one of the most sought-after managers in world football now after his historic 2024-25 season with Bayer Leverkusen.
Alonso recently returned to Anfield for a UEFA Champions League tie against Liverpool and received a warm welcome at his former hunting ground.
Now, it appears as if another former Liverpool midfielder – who played alongside both Gerrard and Alonso – is set to take over the reigns at Inter Miami.
Ex-Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano to manage Inter Miami
Inter Miami have quickly become one of the most followed clubs in world football after Lionel Messi’s move to the club.
Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is also currently plying his trade for the club as he spends the twilight years of his career away from the spotlight.
Tata Martino – who once managed Messi for Argentina – was Inter Miami’s manager until he was relieved of his duties this week.
And now, it appears as if former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is set to take the job at the MLS club.
According to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Mascherano will leave his position as Argentina U-20 head coach to sign a long-term contract with Inter Miami, although further details remain unclear at this stage.
Two Liverpool greats set to reunite in Miami
Mascherano was a firm fan favorite at Anfield before leaving for Barcelona as he formed a fantastic midfield trio with Alonso and Gerrard.
Suarez, on the other hand, is arguably the most talented Liverpool player of the Premier League era and his 2013-14 campaign will be remembered for years to come.
The pair played together at Barcelona and will reunite in Miami, where the likes of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba also currently ply their trades.
If the deal goes through, pictures of Mascherano and Suarez in Inter Miami colors will emerge on social media and the Anfield faithful will no doubt look at those and think about the fond memories of the pair in Liverpool red.
