Over one week into the January transfer window and there is no sign of any movement from Liverpool.

Despite the Reds beginning to look somewhat leggy under Arne Slot, there is little to suggest any incoming business at Anfield.

Things could still change, of course, but for the time being it’s all quiet at Liverpool.

One player who had perhaps been viewed as a potential option by supporters in the lead up to the window was Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush.

The Egyptian has been having an excellent season, scoring 18 goals and provided 13 assists so far. As they assess their attacking depth, there were very strong suggestions that Liverpool wanted to sign Marmoush.

However, as January progresses, it now looks like Manchester City have stolen a march on the competition and are heavy favourites to land the 25-year-old. And according to journalist David Ornstein, there is a clear reason for that.

Clubs not convinced by Man City target Omar Marmoush

At one stage in the not too distant past there were numerous reports that Liverpool were leading the race for Marmoush.

But things seemingly never progressed at all between the Reds and the Egypt international.

Although some supporters may have been frustrated by that, Ornstein has spoken to The Athletic FC podcast to provide some interesting background on this transfer.

While he does not comment on Liverpool’s pursuit of Marmoush specifically, the journalist does assert that other clubs have not been convinced by the Eintracht man’s quality.

“I’ve spoken to a number of recruitment personnel at different clubs and around the game who have reservations on him, they don’t think he’s the required level for Manchester City,” Ornstein reports.

“But it’s a game of opinions and City are going to have some of the cleverest minds in the market looking at situations like this.”

Liverpool could pay Omar Marmoush price

Signing a player like Marmoush does not seem to be especially out of the Manchester City handbook. However, the Premier League champions are clearly enamoured by the Eintracht man.

If Marmoush does arrive at the Etihad Stadium, Liverpool fans will be keeping a very close eye as to how he’s getting on.

Should the former Wolfsburg forward fail, it will obviously be seen as a good decision to stay out of this transfer saga.

But if Marmoush goes to City and does well, then supporters will rightfully be asking why Liverpool did not hammer home an apparant advantage when they had the chance.
