'I was selfish': Martin Zubimendi explains what really happened when he rejected move to Liverpool

Liverpool supporters are waiting on with intrigue ahead of what could be a key January transfer window.
The Reds arguably have some work to do over the winter, having failed to properly address some issues within the squad over the summer.
Perhaps the primary need for Arne Slot remains finding the ideal central midfielder to add to the Liverpool squad.
Liverpool tried to do that before the season started, of course, attempting to lure Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
But although Liverpool thought they had Zubimendi’s word, the Spaniard decided to change his mind and stay at his boyhood club.
Four months or so on from his decision, Zubimendi has spoken out on what really happened with Liverpool.
Martin Zubimendi opens up on Liverpool snub
Ahead of the January window there have been claims that Liverpool could come back in for Zubimendi.
However, judging by the 25-year-old’s comments to Spanish outlet El Diario Vasco, it does not sound like he especially regrets saying ‘no’ to the Reds.
“I went on vacation, and it caught me by surprise. It wasn't something I had planned,” Zubimendi reveals of Liverpool’s interest.
“I reacted when the situation arose. It was an uncomfortable time for me But I weighed the pros and cons and concluded that the best option was to stay.”
“I don't believe in "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunities,” adds the Spain midfielder, crucially. “If you're good and want to achieve something, it will come to you. There's no need to rush.”

Expanding on why he chose to reject Liverpool, Zubimendi claimed that there were many ‘selfish’ reasons for him to stay put.
“I looked at my personal progression, who I am, and the club's project,” he says. I stayed because I knew this season would be important for me in the team, and I still had steps to take. It wasn't that hard of a decision.
“There were many reasons for my decision, but I was selfish and thought about what was best for me. And that was staying.”
Zubimendi closes the door on Liverpool
It could be that Zubimendi is simply trying to reaffirm to the Real Sociedad fans that he is committed to their club, but the strength of his words here may shut the door to Liverpool.
The Reds are reportedly still admirers of Zubimendi’s, but he simply does not seem interested at all.
From a Real Sociedad point of view, that is obviously brilliant, but from Liverpool’s, they should now walk away.
The chance to join Liverpool has proven to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that others have regretted not taking in the past. Mario Gotze will attest to that.
Zubimendi is having another good season and perhaps his move will one day come, but Liverpool should not knock twice for him.
