Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold has been the talk of the town in recent weeks as he continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid.

His current deal at Anfield expires at the end of the season and Liverpool remain in talks to tie him down to a long-term contract, as is the case with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

However, Real Madrid launched a January move to sign Alexander-Arnold, which was swiftly rejected by the Reds.

And now, journalist Ben Jacobs has shared what he’s heard about the Liverpool vice-captain’s demands to remain at the club.

Real Madrid’s interest in Alexander-Arnold is the worst-kept secret in football, with the Spanish giants on the lookout for a long-term successor for Dani Carvajal.

The 26-year-old has been at his boyhood club his whole career and has won the lot as he starred in Jurgen Klopp’s all-conquering team.

And now, under Arne Slot, it looks like the Reds can build on Klopp’s legacy as they lead the way in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League this season.

Jacobs feels Alexander-Arnold wants at least a three-year contract and to captain the club in the future, with Virgil van Dijk currently serving that role after taking over the armband from Jordan Henderson last season.

He explained on talkSPORT: "Interestingly, one thing I've heard is that although Trent is not open to a mid-season move, what he does want from Liverpool to extend is a three-year contract minimum and, in the long run, to be captain.

“So keep an eye as to whether perhaps the Virgil van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold talks are somewhat intertwined. If Trent is told he's going to be captain, does that impact Van Dijk's future?"

What next for Alexander-Arnold?

By his own admission, the 26-year-old said his contract talks with Liverpool won’t play out in public, so he isn’t expected to talk about his future anytime soon.

However, the Anfield faithful can be rest assured everything will be done respectfully, with the defender still prioritising talks with Liverpool despite Real Madrid’s interest.

Real Madrid are expected to make a second offer for Alexander-Arnold and the answer is expected to be a firm no once again.

Liverpool won’t want the saga to carry over into the coming months as they are in a title race, so they will expect to arrive at some kind of conclusion in the coming weeks.
