Liverpool booked their ticket into the next round of the League Cup with a 5-1 thrashing against West Ham.

Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo were both on fire for the Reds as the attackers both picked up a brace against a sorry West Ham side who were woeful on the night, Mohamed Salah also scoring shortly after coming on in the second-half.

With Jamie Carragher praising Jota’s performance on the night, it was a good game for Arne Slot, who even after rotating his starting XI showed that he has the players to take on good Premier League opposition.

And Carragher also noticed something about Liverpool’s squad depth after their win against West Ham.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher noted how good Gakpo was on the night, with the pundit highlighting that the Dutch international is a backup for the Reds, with the Anfield legend saying: “This is Liverpool’s backup left winger. It just shows you the quality they have in reserve at this moment.”

With Carragher also hailing Gakpo’s link-up play with Kostas Tsimikas, the former PSV Eindhoven attacker enjoyed quite the performance for Liverpool last night at Anfield, with the winger bagging his first goals of the season under Slot.

Indeed, the 25-year-old winger had managed just one start before last night’s game in the UEFA Champions League against AC Milan, with Slot choosing Luis Diaz as his main left-winger in the Premier League.

Yet even with the Colombia international on fire this season for Liverpool, Gakpo showed last night that he can be a solid option for the left-wing position for the Reds, with the Dutch international making a real case for himself against West Ham to start in future games.

Gakpo the big winner from Liverpool’s 5-1 win vs West Ham

Gakpo has endured a slow start to the season under Slot in part to Diaz’s incredible form in the first few games of the new Premier League campaign, where the former FC Porto man has looked like a man possessed out on the left.

Yet against West Ham, Gakpo emerged as the big winner for Liverpool with the winger showing Slot and the supporters at Anfield just how good he can be after an impressive performance in the attack against the Irons.

Gakpo has shown in the last 18 months at Liverpool that he can be an outstanding option for the front-line when needed, and the former PSV captain was certainly that last night at Anfield against West Ham.
