One transfer window has barely ended for Liverpool before the next is being speculated over.

The Reds did not do enough business in the eyes of many ahead of the current season and will need to be more active in 2025.

For the time being, it looks most likely that Liverpool will target a new midfielder for Arne Slot either in January or next summer.

A move for Martin Zubimendi could potentially be reignited, while reports have suggested that Liverpool could try and sign Hugo Larsson from Eintracht Frankfurt, too.

As the hunt for the right midfielder to add to the Liverpool squad goes on, though, there can be few question marks over the current state of the Reds attack.

Nevertheless, that has not stopped claims that Liverpool will look to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen next summer. Now, journalist David Lynch has weighed in on the likelihood of Wirtz moving to Anfield.

Liverpool definitely watching Florian Wirtz

Wirtz has been linked with Liverpool for years now. Still only 21, the Germany international has been around for a fair while already.

And while he looked like a promising young player in his teenage years, Wirtz is now really developing at a rapid rate.

The former Koln youngster has been one of the best players in the Bundesliga for over a season now.

Having blossomed under Xabi Alonso last term, Wirtz has continued his excellent form into this campaign. The forward already has six goals in seven games.

This has led to claims that Europe’s elite are all following Wirtz ahead of a transfer next summer.

But speaking to Anfield Agenda, Lynch has claimed that while Liverpool are certainly on this list of interested clubs, it’s unlikely that they will follow that up with a concrete offer.

“Florian Wirtz, absolutely no doubt that Liverpool are watching him,” said the journalist. “They watch every player of that sort of profile and talent.

“But again, the position he plays in, is there a desperate need for Liverpool there, is that an area they need to spend the kind of money it would take to get Wirtz out of Leverkusen? Again, I’m kind of sceptical about that.

“I’m sure they’ve kept an eye on him for a long time,” adds Lynch. “But making the leap to sign him with the money involved, I’d be really, really surprised.”

Time to ignore Florian Wirtz rumours

Of course, something may change in this regard between now and next summer, there is a long way to go until then after all.

But given how far ahead Liverpool like to plan things, there just does not seem much likelihood at all of them changing tack and going all in on Wirtz.

Such is the talent of the German, he is going to cost whoever gets him an absolute bomb.

As Lynch says, the forward line is simply not a priority for Liverpool to spend that kind of money in.

There is obviously still a chance that Mohamed Salah leaves and frees up space and a need for that to change. But Wirtz would not be anything like a Salah replacement. In our opinion, unless there’s a drastic shift, it’s almost time to put this one to bed.
