Liverpool maintained their perfect record in the UEFA Champions League as they secured a 2-1 win against Lille.

The Reds now just need a point against PSV Eindhoven to guarantee top spot after making it seven wins out of seven in the competition and fared quite well on the night.

Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock for the home side with a fantastic finish in the first half, but Jonathan David drew Lille level despite Aissa Mandi’s sending-off in the second half.

However, Harvey Elliott’s deflected efforts ultimately turned out to be the winner for the Reds as the Englishman came off the bench to produce another memorable cameo.

During the game, Liverpool also set a new club record as they capped off a fine night at Anfield with another win under Arne Slot.

Heading into the game at Anfield, Liverpool had just conceded one goal in the Champions League, which was against AC Milan in the first game when Christian Pulisic gave the Serie A giants a shock lead at San Siro.

Since then, the Reds have won against Bologna, RB Leipzig, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Girona without conceding.

In the 36th minute mark of the game, they finally broke their best-ever defensive record in the competition, having not conceded a goal in Europe for 573 minutes.

Their previous European best came under Rafa Benitez’s leadership as the Spaniard guided the Reds to 572 minutes without conceding during the 2005-06 season.

Slot has made Liverpool notoriously hard to beat and their new defensive record in Europe is another feather in the Dutchman’s cap during his short stint at Anfield so far.

What next for Liverpool?

Liverpool now need just a point to finish first in the Champions League, making their eighth group-stage game of the season against PSV Eindhoven a tricky one for Slot.

The Dutchman opted to name a strong starting lineup for this game to secure top spot and while Liverpool managed to get the job done, Barcelona’s dramatic win against Benfica means they still have some work to do on matchday eight.

The Reds will now look to rest up and recuperate as they return to Premier League action on Saturday when they face Ipswich Town at Anfield.
