In recent weeks, an interesting transfer story involving Liverpool hit the mainstream media.
The Reds refrained from splashing the cash in the summer transfer window and don’t look likely to do anything in January.
However, they are on the lookout for potential market opportunities to bolster their ranks in the summer and remain ready to pounce if one of their targets suddenly becomes available now.
Joshua Kimmich has been linked with a move to Liverpool, with his current deal with Bayern Munich set to expire at the end of the season.
And now, with Manchester City also in the running, reports from Germany claim the Reds are more likely to sign him than their rivals.
Joshua Kimmich more likely to join Liverpool than Manchester City
Kimmich has been with Bayern for nearly ten years now and has become a key player for club and country in that period.
However, his contract situation makes him a perfect market opportunity for the Reds as they could snap him up for free in the summer if he doesn’t renew his current deal.
Earlier this month, Liverpool made initial contact with Kimmich to test the waters over a potential transfer.
And now, Tobi Altschaffl claims he is more likely to renew his contract at Bayern, although Liverpool are ahead of Man City in the race to sign him for free.
He wrote on X:” A signing of Joshua Kimmich is still being discussed at Liverpool FC. At ManCity, those in charge are relying on even younger players during the restructuring, and Kimmich is currently not an option there.
“The most likely scenario is on, as reported: Kimmich is still taking his time, but will stay with Bayern in the end (2/2).”
Kimmich’s arrival could solve two problems for Liverpool
With Trent Alexander-Arnold linked with a move to Real Madrid, Liverpool could be in the market for a right-back in the summer if the England international moves to Spain.
Additionally, the Reds are also on the lookout for a number six to provide cover and competition for Ryan Gravenberch, who has played every Premier League and UEFA Champions League game this season.
Kimmich is capable of playing in both positions and has loads of experience, while his title-winning pedigree could prove to be invaluable to the squad.
As reported, he remains likely to renew his contract with Bayern, but if that somehow doesn’t work out, don’t be surprised to see Liverpool make a move to sign him for free.
