Liverpool’s owners FSG have taken steps towards acquiring another football club.

The Americans have shown interest in the multi-club model for some time now as it has become a key part of the strategies for several owners around Europe, such as Red Bull, the City Football Group and BlueCo.

Michael Edwards was brought back by the Liverpool owners to help out with this operation and it looks like the ball has started rolling.

It was reported on Saturday that FSG are interested in purchasing Malaga with the American owners already exploring a deal to gain majority ownership for the La Liga 2 side. However, they face competition from Paris Saint-Germain's owners, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI).

This model would have benefits to Liverpool and had they acquired the Spanish club years ago, the Reds would have saved £50m this summer.

Liverpool interested in former Malaga star Dean Huijsen

Liverpool are in the market for a new centre-back this summer as doubt remains over the future of Virgil van Dijk at Anfield, although the Reds do need to start planning the Dutch star’s successor, even if the 33-year-old stays.

Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen is a top target for Liverpool and can be acquired this summer for £50m as that is the release clause in his Cherries contract.

It remains uncertain if the Merseyside club will make a move for the centre-back as Liverpool may have to choose between Huijsen and Milos Kerkez this summer and Bournemouth are unlikely to sell both, with a left-back being a bigger priority for Arne Slot.

However, should Liverpool move for the Spanish star, FSG could have saved themselves £50m had they purchased Malaga years ago.

Huijsen was part of the La Liga 2 club’s academy for six years between 2015 and 2021 before moving to Juventus. The centre-back is one of Europe’s most sought-after at present and at the very least, the Premier League leaders could have made a lot of money off him, had he failed at Anfield.

This is a case where FSG’s multi-club plans would have a direct impact on Liverpool and it could be a sign of what is to come in the future.

The future of Liverpool under a multi-club model

There will be many Liverpool fans who will not be happy with the Reds becoming part of a multi-club ownership as the model is usually unfair for the smaller clubs in the system, which has been seen with the anger Strasbourg fans have shown towards Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo.

However, it could have a positive effect on the club, evident in the Huijsen case. Owning multiple clubs would also allow the Premier League leaders to give some of their young stars a chance to experience first team football, while keeping them fully under their control.

Malaga could also have benefited from the model this season as Liverpool would have likely sent Stefan Bajcetic to La Liga 2 side as the midfielder is currently impressing at Las Palmas.

Negatives can be found everywhere in the multi-club model, but the positives seem to outweigh them. It will be interesting to see how it affects Liverpool further down the line as this is a route FSG are clearly going down.
