'Makes it look so easy': Alan Shearer says one Liverpool player did something 'outrageous' against Leicester
Yesterday at 04:00 AM
Liverpool turned it on in the second-half on Boxing Day to record a come-from-behind win over Leicester City.
The Reds were presented with the chance to move seven points clear in the Premier League after Chelsea were surprisingly beaten by Fulham earlier in the day.
After Jordan Ayew put Leicester ahead after just six minutes, it felt as though Liverpool may squander that surprise opportunity.
But as they usually do, the Reds came back. Goals from Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones turned the game on its head either side of half-time.
Gakpo was the standout performer as he hauled Liverpool back into the game with a stunning effort.
But the final word of the game was, as ever, saved for Mohamed Salah. Unwilling to be upstaged, Salah still had to time to leave Alan Shearer purring.
Alan Shearer hails ‘outrageous’ Mohamed Salah
Salah was unlucky not to get a goal before he eventually did on Thursday.
The Egyptian went close a couple of times in the first-half, rattling the crossbar with an excellent curling effort.
And with Liverpool perhaps still feeling that they needed that all-important third goal to kill the game off, Salah duly delivered with eight minutes remaining.
It was a superb strike, too. Fed by a pinpoint lofted pass from Gakpo, Salah attacked left-back Victor Kristiansen before bending a gentle shot into Jakub Stolarczyk’s far corner.
Relief around Anfield with the game won and a 16th Premier League goal of the season for Salah. Looking back on the strike for BBC Match of the Day, Shearer was suitably impressed.
“This is an outrageous finish,” raved the Premier League’s all-time top scorer. “He makes it look so easy but of course it’s not. The way he sort of guides it into the corner.”
Salah pulls clear in Golden Boot race
Salah is inarguably the most in-form player in the Premier League right now. In fact, he is quite probably the best performing player in world football.
Game after game the 32-year-old is turning up with big moments for Liverpool.
Player | Awards Won |
Thierry Henry | 4 |
Mohamed Salah | 3 |
Alan Shearer | 3 |
Harry Kane | 3 |
Michael Owen | 2 |
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink | 2 |
Didier Drogba | 2 |
Robin van Persie | 2 |
Erling Haaland | 2 |
And after Erling Haaland missed a penalty for Manchester City on Thursday, Salah is now pulling clear of the Norwegian in the Golden Boot race.
Mo has already won the award three times, but has not had a sniff at it since Haaland joined City in 2023.
Nevertheless, now three ahead of his primary rival, Salah will be laser focused on equalling Thierry Henry as the only player to have finished as the Premier League’s leading marksman in four separate seasons. Magnificent.
