Liverpool could be set for a big 2025 in terms of squad reshaping and recruitment.

The Reds were a little too quiet during 2024, signing only Federico Chiesa for the here and now and Giorgi Mamardashvili for the future.

But Liverpool supporters will be desperately hoping that Mamardashvili is joined by a number of new faces over the coming eight or nine months.

Indeed, the Liverpool owners may have little choice but to put their hand in the their pocket. They could yet be searching for replacements for Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

There is further work that needs doing on the Liverpool squad as well, with the forward line looking ready for a bit of a touch-up.

As doubt surrounds the future of Darwin Nunez, for example, journalist Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool are looking closely at Borussia Dortmund attacker Jamie Gittens as a possible remedy signing.

Liverpool jostling for Jamie Gittens

Gittens has been in superb form for Dortmund this season. Still only 20, the Englishman has hit nine goals and three assists in 23 appearances.

Very much treading the path of Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham before him, Gittens is the latest player to jump ship from an English academy to make it at Dortmund.

In Gittens’ case, like Sancho, he also left Manchester City before even turning 17. Three years later and now smashing it in the Bundesliga, Romano says he looks set for his big move in 2025 and Liverpool are in the running.

“My understanding is that from Borussia Dortmund they can feel that in 2025, probably the summer more than January, it’s going to be difficult to keep Jamie Gittens at the club,” the journalist told his YouTube channel on Tuesday.

“The interest form Premier League clubs is more than strong. Premier League clubs are really, really following closely the progress of Gittens. Keep an eye on many clubs monitoring his progress.

“My understanding is the big Premier League clubs are starting to move for Gittens to try to understand what’s going to happen,” Romano adds.

“More than likely to be summer, January is going to be more than difficult.

“My understanding is that several times scouts from Liverpool and Chelsea and more clubs have been in attendance to follow his progress.”

How much will Gittens cost?

This is not the first time Liverpool have been linked with Gittens. However, it is to this point the strongest mention of the Reds and the former City man.

It is not a surprise to see Liverpool jostling to get ahead in the race for Gittens as they look at the best options to bolster their attacks.

However, reports from December suggested that Dortmund will be looking to recoup as much as £83m if they do sell their second top scorer this season.

From a Liverpool point of view, that price is going to have to come down considerably if they are to take their interest any further.

If Dortmund hold out – and they certainly have in the past – then we’ll more likely see Gittens end up alongside Sancho at Chelsea.
