'Not for the first time': Arne Slot says Liverpool did something vs Lille that made him really unhappy
Today at 12:30 AM
Liverpool made it seven wins out of seven in the UEFA Champions League under Arne Slot as they secured a 2-1 victory against Lille at Anfield.
The Reds have now booked their place in the Round of 16 of the competition but need a point against PSV Eindhoven on matchday eight to secure top spot after Barcelona staged a stunning fightback to beat Benfica.
Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock with a fantastic finish, but Jonathan David was on hand to restore parity for the visitors.
Harvey Elliott came on as a second-half substitute and made a big impact once again as his deflected effort eventually turned out to be the winner for the Reds.
And despite the result, Arne Slot feels Liverpool did something that made him really unhappy during the game.
Arne Slot rues Lille’s equaliser vs Liverpool
Liverpool were in complete control of the game but weren’t at their best in the final third, although Salah did score a fantastic goal in the second half to give them the lead.
The Egyptian missed a glorious chance before the interval and Lille struck back despite going to ten men after David slotted the ball home from close range.
Apart from the Canadian’s goal – which eventually turned out to be a consolation – the Reds were fairly comfortable at the back and weren’t trouble as they navigated the rest of the game quite comfortably due to their man advantage.
But Slot feels Liverpool once again conceded from the only chance the opposition created on the night, which is starting to become a bit of a pattern in recent weeks.
“The only thing I wasn’t happy about is that not for the first time in recent weeks, it was one chance for the other team and it was a goal,” said Slot in his post-match press conference.
“But yeah, maybe that’s the phase of the season we are in at the moment.”
Slot also claimed Curtis Jones asked to come off at half-time for Liverpool as the Reds continue to sweat over his fitness.
What next for Liverpool?
As for their Champions League campaign, they maintained their 100% record in the competition but still have a bit of work to do to secure top spot, which shouldn’t be a problem as they only need a draw against PSV away from home.
In the Premier League, they return to action on Saturday as Ipswich Town prepare to visit Anfield.
The Reds returned to winning ways domestically as they secured a last-gasp victory against Brentford and will look to build on it with three more points at Anfield this weekend.
