Liverpool still appear to be on the lookout for the final piece of their midfield puzzle under Arne Slot.

The Reds pushed hard to tie up the signing of Martin Zubimendi over the summer, but could not convince the Basque to leave his boyhood club.

As a result, Ryan Gravenberch has been given the chance to blossom and has so far taken it wonderfully.

Gravenberch has been brilliant in a new-look Liverpool midfield which has also seen Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai go up a gear.

Nevertheless, reports suggest that Liverpool will still try and sign another midfielder either in January or next summer.

Zubimendi is still a potential option, but there are now clear signs that the Reds have started looking elsewhere as well.

Liverpool interested in Merlin Rohl

It’s fair to say that Liverpool have not been worse off for having seen Zubimendi reject them in August.

Gravenberch’s emergence has been the biggest positive of a season which has been littered with them so far under Slot.

But Wednesday’s Carabao Cup game against West Ham shone a bit of a light on the fact that the drop off between the Liverpool head coach’s first and second XI’s is quite large in midfield.

Wataru Endo has started to prove Slot wrong, but the Japan captain is 31 and has never been seen as a long-term option.

So, with that in mind, reports that Liverpool are looking at Hugo Larsson of Eintracht Frankfurt appear to have some credence. At six feet one inch tall, Larsson is a big presence in the midfield.

But according to journalist Christian Falk, Liverpool are also looking at another player from the German Bundesliga who is even bigger: six foot three inch Merlin Rohl of Freiburg.

“Liverpool have Merlin Rohl (22) of FC Freiburg on their list,” Falk reports on X. “Scouts watched the U21 German Midfield-Player already.

“Freiburg offered a new contract also because of the interest of the Reds. At the Moment, Rohl is injured.”

Who is Merlin Rohl?

Having kept their powder dry over the summer, it’s a decent bet that Liverpool are looking at potential midfield signings from all over the world at the moment.

And given that they didn’t see any other options other than Zubimendi, it’s probably fair to assume that we can discard any of the names frequently linked in recent months. The likes of Alan Varela, for example.

Instead, we think that if Liverpool do not go back in for Zubimendi, they will be looking at some completely new names.

Rohl is certainly an interesting one in that regard. The 22-year-old appears to be a rangy midfielder who tends to play a little higher up the pitch for Freiburg.

Fast, tall and a real presence on the pitch, Rohl is a Germany U21 international with 40 senior appearances for Freiburg to his name. In our opinion, Larsson looks the better option, but Rohl is certainly one to keep in mind.
