Report: 'Incredible' CL-winning defender is edging closer to a transfer and Liverpool are right in the mix
Today at 11:30 AM
The January transfer window is well underway but Liverpool have thus far refrained from doing any business.
Arne Slot oversaw a quiet first summer in charge of the club, with Federico Chiesa the only player who walked through the door at Anfield.
The Reds agreed a deal to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, but the Georgian goalkeeper is only set to join the club in the summer of 2025.
It remains to be seen if Liverpool do anything in January, but it appears as if one of their long-term transfer targets has edged closer to leaving his club on a free transfer.
Alphonso Davies wants to talk to other clubs amid Liverpool interest
Liverpool can’t have too many complains about how their season has gone so far, but they have a bit of an issue at left-back.
Andy Robertson seems to be running on his last legs and hasn’t managed to deliver the goods consistently, while Kostas Tsimikas’ combination of injuries and inconsistency proves he can’t be a dependable asset.
In recent weeks, Liverpool have been liked with a move for Milos Kerkez, who is reportedly keen to move to Anfield over other potential suitors.
Alphonso Davies is another left-back who has been linked with a move to Liverpool and the Canadian international’s contract expires in the summer, making him an intriguing option for teams across the continent.
The explosive defender has been in contract extension talks with Bayern Munich but has thus far been unable to agree terms with the Bavarian giants.
Now, reports from Germany suggest Davies has edged closer to an exit amid interest from Liverpool, Manchester City and Real Madrid, among others.
According to BILD, Bayern feel Davies’ situation is ‘complicated’ as they haven’t been able to meet his wage demands, with the parties off by around £8.4m over the course of his four-year contract period.
The Canadian’s agent Nick Househ is currently in Munich but is set to leave tomorrow as Davies is keen to talk to other interested clubs like Liverpool to potentially test the waters.
The report states that the ‘poker’ for Davies is very much open, although Bayern internally feel that an extension for the left-back looks difficult currently.
Davies’ wages could be too much for Liverpool
Davies has been one of the most exciting full-backs in Europe since joining Bayern six years ago and has been described as an unbelievable player by Joshua Kimmich.
“That was unbelievable,” said Kimmich when the defender set him up for a goal against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League in 2020 (via Bundesliga).
“Even I was a bit ashamed when I celebrated. He gets 99 percent of the credit for the goal. I only had to get the ball over the line.”
However, if Bayern can’t afford his wages, Liverpool most definitely can’t as they contract issues involving Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold to sort out first.
Kerkez would represent a much better option and the Hungarian also comes with nearly two seasons of Premier League experience, the Reds would be better off making a move for him if they decide to sign a left-back.
