Report: Liverpool considering bizarre move for international captain after he was dropped by his club
Today at 02:30 AM
Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in world football, yet that doesn’t mean the Reds are exempt from criticism when it comes to transfers in recent years.
The great spending splurge of 2014 under Brendan Rodgers after the sale of Luis Suarez remains infamous among Liverpool fans as the Reds paid big money for players who would go on to flop at Anfield, such as Mario Balotelli, Lazar Markovic and Rickie Lambert.
With Liverpool also having some transfer missteps during the Jurgen Klopp era with the likes of Naby Keita, Loris Karius and Thiago Alcantara, even the biggest and the best in football can make mistakes when it comes to transfers.
And Liverpool is now in the mix for one of the biggest names in Europe, which could follow a similar vein if the transfer were to happen somehow.
Liverpool in the race for Italy captain and PSG star Gianluigi Donnarumma
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool are one of the many top sides keeping tabs on Gianluigi Donnarumma’s situation at PSG, with the Italy captain recently dropped from the French side’s starting XI after a poor start to the season.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper is regarded as one of the best in the world as well as one of the most experienced having made his debut at 16 with AC Milan and not looking back ever since, with the shot-stopper key to Italy’s Euro 2020 win.
However, with Caoimhin Kelleher drawing comparisons to Emi Martinez and Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirming that Alisson Becker will be back in action this month, signing Donnarumma just makes no sense from the Reds’ point of view.
Moreover, with next summer seeing the arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, there is zero incentive from Liverpool to be spending big on a goalkeeper for quite some years, with Slot’s side having three top-class options on their books already.
Liverpool links to Donnarumma are truly baffling
Liverpool being rumoured with a move for Donnarumma is likely just agent talk being drummed up to attract interest in the 25-year-old goalkeeper, who in the last 18 months has seen his form dip off a cliff for both PSG and Italy.
Yet whilst Donnarumma is a top player and one of the best goalkeepers in the world, nobody is going to believe that Liverpool of all teams is interested in the Azzurri superstar, especially with the Reds having the best options between the sticks out of any side in Europe this season.
Indeed, Liverpool’s goalkeeping options are solid for the next decade or so, and signing Donnarumma would just be plain bizarre, especially with how other positions in the team need love and attention heading into 2025.
