Report: Liverpool eyeing shock move for 'fantastic' Premier League player who has caught the eye this season

Liverpool have been fantastic since the arrival of Arne Slot as the Dutchman continues to imprint his philosophy at the club.

With almost half the season done, the Reds lead the way in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, raising the possibility of winning silverware in 2025.

As Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future continues to hang in the balance – with the 26-year-old’s contract set to expire at the end of the season – Liverpool could be forced to dip into the transfer market if he leaves.

Alexander-Arnold is believed to be listening to Real Madrid’s sales pitch, although he remains in talks with Liverpool about a potential extension.

According to Simon Phillips, Chelsea’s Malo Gusto has emerged as a surprise target for Liverpool, with the Frenchman making a massive impression under Enzo Maresca this season.

Manchester City are also believed to be in the running for the Chelsea man, with Kyle Walker on his last legs as he finds himself desperately out of form this season.

The report states that the Blues have no intention of selling Gusto, who only joined the club last year from Lyon and put pen to paper on a contract until 2030.

What has Maresca said about Gusto?

Gusto is a versatile player and has been deployed as a left-back and as a number ten this season by Maresca, whose Chelsea side are just four points behind Liverpool in the Premier League standings.

When asked about Gusto earlier this season, the Italian manager lavished praise on his ability to play in multiple positions.

“For sure, he is doing fantastic,” said Maresca via Football London when asked about Gusto’s ability to play in different positions.

“I said in the last press conference: Malo is helping us a lot in the process because he is playing as a holding midfielder, he is playing in the pocket, he is playing I think for some moment like a central defender.”
