Report: Liverpool pondering move for £150m Premier League player who Alan Shearer thinks is 'superb'

Liverpool could be in the market for a new player to lead their forward line in 2025.
While the Reds have been good in-front of goal this season and are in fact the Premier League’s top scorers, there is a feeling that a more permanent solution is needed at centre forward.
Darwin Nunez has been in poor form throughout the season, while Arne Slot has not been able to rely on the fitness of Diogo Jota.
As a result, it seems more than possible that Slot and Liverpool will be looking for a new solution.
Throw Mohamed Salah’s current uncertain situation into the mix and it becomes clear that the Liverpool squad could do with another option.
Slot was impressed with Alexander Isak after watching him score for Newcastle against Liverpool recently. And according to new reports, Isak may be one to watch for the Reds.
Liverpool keen on £150m Alexander Isak
Isak was linked with Liverpool before even joining Newcastle. However, the Reds opted to bring Nunez to Anfield instead.
In hindsight, that was probably a mistake. While the Uruguayan has hit 37 goals in 119 games for Liverpool, Isak has plundered 47 in just 86.
Despite starting the season slowly, the Swede has been hitting top form for Newcastle over the festive period. Having scored 11 goals in his past 12 appearances, Alan Shearer calling Isak ‘superb‘ looks entirely justified.
But Isak’s brilliant form could also become a problem for Newcastle. According to The Telegraph, the 25-year-old is now ‘one of the most coveted players in Europe.’

One of the sides interested in Isak is said to be Liverpool, who could reportedly look at the Sweden international as a potential replacement for Salah.
Should the Reds decide to push ahead with a move, though, they’ll have to pay big. Newcastle are said to have put a £150m price-tag on Isak as way to ‘ward off interest’ from the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG.
Liverpool should stay out of Isak race
Isak has been sensational recently. Although it’s arguable that any player can justify a £150m fee, the former Real Sociedad man is putting that theory to the test at the moment.
Nevertheless, while there has been a clamour from some Liverpool fans to bring him to Merseyside, there are several reasons why Isak is not worth the money.
Season | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
2022/23 | 27 | 10 | 2 |
2023/24 | 40 | 25 | 2 |
2024/25 | 19 | 12 | 4 |
The first – and most important – is his fitness record. While Nunez has not hit the goal scoring heights of Isak during their shared time in the Premier League, at least he has managed to get out on the pitch. The Reds No.9 has played 33 more games than his rival at Newcastle over the same period.
For the kind of money the Magpies are asking, you’d want someone who’s going to be available 100 per cent of the time.
Another reason is Isak’s age. Although he does not turn 26 until next September, Liverpool are unlikely to want to spend such an amount on a player who they’d only get a few years out of. Especially one with an injury record like Isak’s. Top player, but no, thank you.
