The UEFA Champions League is back with Liverpool back in the competition, and it hasn’t taken long for history to be made in the revamped tournament.

Bayern Munich broke the record for the most goals scored in a single ‘group’ game after their 9-2 win against Dinamo Zagreb, with Liverpool kicking off their Champions League campaign with a much-needed 3-1 victory over AC Milan.

With Liverpool impressing against the Italian giants, the Anfield side have got off to the ideal start in the new Champions League format, with the Reds currently sat third in the standings behind Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Bayern.

Yet Liverpool aren’t done with the Champions League just yet, with a scouting mission set to take place tonight.

Liverpool to scout Girona’s Viktor Tsygankov and Miguel Gutierrez in historic game

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool will have scouts in attendance tonight for Girona’s first-ever Champions League game away to PSG to watch star players Viktor Tsygankov and Miguel Gutierrez.

The Catalan side made headlines last season by securing European qualification for the first time in their history after a fairytale season that saw Girona push the likes of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona for the La Liga title, only to fall short.

And Tsygankov and Gutierrez were key to Girona’s incredible success last year, with the duo expected to be named in Michel’s starting XI tonight against PSG in what will be a game to remember for the La Liga side.

Now, there will be extra pressure for the Girona duo to perform tonight in Paris with Liverpool’s scouts set to be in attendance at the Parcs de Princes, with Arsenal and Aston Villa also set to be keeping tabs on Tsygankov and Gutierrez.

Liverpool need to use the new Champions League format to their advantage

Whether or not more teams and more games in a revamped Champions League format is actually good for the European game is a question that will likely be answered later down the line, yet for Liverpool and their scouts, they need to use the new competition to their advantage.

With 18 games taking place across each Champions League week, there is a lot of potential for Liverpool’s scouts to find their next top transfer target ahead of the January transfer window.

And scouting the likes of Girona could help Liverpool unearth a real gem in the market, especially with Arne Slot making just the two signings this summer in Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa.
