The contract saga between Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold seems to be headed towards its climax.

The England international’s current deal at Anfield expires next summer and while there have been talks about an extension, the two parties have been unable to agree terms so far.

Alexander-Arnold is wanted by Real Madrid and will be free to negotiate with the La Liga giants – or any other club – from January 1st, putting Liverpool in a precarious position.

And now, if reports from Spain are to be believed, the Liverpool vice-captain seemingly already has one foot out of the door.

Madrid’s interest in Alexander-Arnold is well-documented, with the club developing a reputation for completing some high-profile free transfers over the years.

The likes of Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba and Kylian Mbappe have all been snapped up for free by Florentino Perez and it appears as if Alexander-Arnold is next in line to join.

Marca report that the 26-year-old has informed Liverpool of his desire to leave the club and join Real Madrid, where he’d join forces with one of his best friends Jude Bellingham.

FSG didn’t want the saga to drag into the new year and with the club also in negotiations with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, it appears as if they’ve lost the battle to keep Alexander-Arnold.

The report also states that the two clubs share a fantastic relationship and that Liverpool won’t entertain the idea of parting with Alexander-Arnold in January as they look to compete on all fronts under Arne Slot.

Who can replace Alexander-Arnold?

Eddie Howe described Alexander-Arnold as an ‘outstanding’ player, but with the England international already having one foot out of the door at Anfield, it might be time for the club to reluctantly think about the future.

Of course, reports from Spain should always be taken with a pinch of salt, but if he does leave, it remains to be seen how the club reacts.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with Liverpool, but Slot reportedly wants to pursue alternatives as the Dutchman isn’t best suited to playing as a right-back in a flat back-four.

Conor Bradley is already at the club and has shown that he’s more than capable of holding his own on the grandest stage, making the situation a tricky one for Liverpool.
