Liverpool prepare to host Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League tomorrow in what promises to be an intriguing contest at Anfield.

Some of the best players in world football are set to lock horns, but the game has some intriguing subplots to keep an eye out for.

Real Madrid’s interest in signing Trent Alexander-Arnold is well documented and the Liverpool defender will take centre stage at Anfield whether or not he’s fit enough to feature.

However, if reports from Spain are to be believed, the Spanish giants are keeping a close eye on another Liverpool player.

After Martin Zubimendi rejected a move to Anfield, Arne Slot refrained from pursuing alternatives, instead opting to use Ryan Gravenberch as a number six.

And it’s safe to say his decision has turned out to be a masterstroke, with the Dutch midfielder delivering a string of eye-catching displays.

Liverpool are still interested in Zubimendi, but Marca have provided an interesting transfer update that could have serious implications for Liverpool.

According to the Spanish newspaper, Real Madrid now want to sign Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in 2025, who has thus far been reluctant to leave his boyhood club.

The report also states that the La Liga giants are keeping a close eye on Gravenberch as a midfield option, with Joshua Kimmich, Declan Rice and Bruno Guimaraes also mentioned as potential targets among others.

Michael Owen feels Gravenberch has been ‘outstanding’ this season, naming him as the Premier League Player of the Season so far.

Gravenberch’s stats this season

Gravenberch has started every Premier League and UEFA Champions League game for Liverpool this season and has made the number six position his own at the club.

The Dutchman has also delivered a string of impressive performances for his country, becoming a key player in the centre of the park for Ronald Koeman.

He only joined the club last summer and is tied down until 2027, so links with Real Madrid – or any other club – will remain one for the newspapers and nothing else.

A complete non-starter of a transfer link.
