Liverpool took on Arsenal this weekend in what was the headline fixture in the Premier League, yet it was far from the biggest game in Europe.

Real Madrid hosted FC Barcelona in the first El Clasico of the season, with Hansi Flick’s side recording one of their best results in some years with a 4-0 win at the Bernabeu, leaving Carlo Ancelotti and Kylian Mbappe with egg on their face.

With Madrid rumoured to be interested in signing Trent Alexander-Arnold, Los Blancos have endured a tough season having won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League last campaign under Ancelotti, who is facing mounting pressure in the Spanish capital.

And Madrid could now be ready to bring forward plans to appoint a Liverpool icon to succeed Ancelotti.

Real Madrid looking to accelerate plan to appoint Xabi Alonso

According to Sport, Madrid president Florentino Perez is working to bring forward the plan to appoint former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso as Ancelotti’s successor, who could be sacked after Saturday’s 4-0 loss against Barcelona.

Alonso has been strongly linked with the Madrid job after this summer saw the Spanish coach stay at Bayer Leverkusen as Liverpool appointed Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Anfield.

After winning the Bundesliga title and DFB Pokal undefeated, Alonso is one of the most sought-after managers in all of Europe after such an incredible year on the touchline with Leverkusen in Germany.

And with Alonso a former Madrid player, it only makes sense why the Liverpool icon is now the clear favourite to replace Ancelotti at Los Blancos, a move that could be happening sooner than expected after this weekend’s result.

Alonso could be the man to turn Madrid’s season around

Ancelotti was never going to be a long-term option for Madrid, with the legendary Italian manager seemingly weeks away from departing the Spanish giants in what could be his final job in football.

And in Alonso, Madrid could have the perfect successor and the right man for the job to turn Los Blancos’ season around, with the former Liverpool man arguably the most exciting young coach in Europe.

Indeed, Alonso has shown at Leverkusen that he has the tactical knowledge and now the experience to manage the best in the world, and Madrid would be an ideal move for the former Liverpool maestro at this stage in his career.
