Liverpool will now be planning for life without Trent Alexander-Arnold as the defender nears an Anfield exit.

Alexander-Arnold looks set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer after failing to agree a new deal with the Liverpool hierarchy.

Reds supporters have unsurprisingly been left shellshocked by the news, with the likes of Jamie Carragher left ‘disappointed’ about the 26-year-old’s expected departure.

With Alexander-Arnold now set for life in Madrid, it has since been revealed that he could have actually joined another Spanish giant instead.

Trent Alexander-Arnold had meetings with Barcelona

Despite Alexander-Arnold ruling out a move to Spain back in 2020, it seems like Europe has been on his mind for some time.

That is according to Spanish publication Cadena SER, who claim that Barcelona have had multiple meetings with Alexander-Arnold over the past couple of years regarding a possible move.

The report claims that the Spanish giants have been interested in the Liverpool star’s services for some time, with sporting director Deco even meeting with Alexander-Arnold’s representatives.

It is also said that Barcelona even attempted to sign him on a free transfer this summer before the defender decided to join arch-rivals Madrid instead.

Alexander-Arnold’s Barcelona comments may come back to bite him

Alexander-Arnold’s decision to reject Barcalona’s advances may come as a surprise when you reflect on his previous claims about the Spanish outfit.

That is because, in 2020, the right-back actually revealed to GQ that Barcelona were his favourite team barring Liverpool.

“My favourite team besides Liverpool? Would be Barca,” he said. “I feel they have kind of the same values and beliefs as Liverpool. “They like to bring players through the academy. I grew up watching Messi and that special Barcelona team with Iniesta, Xavi, Henry Eto’o.”

Having already declared his love for Barca, Alexander-Arnold will be hoping Madrid fans can forget those claims when he eventually makes his Los Blancos debut.
