Spanish rumour mongers cast the Reds and Tottenham as competition with Barcelona for Tah's signature.

After a quiet summer in 2024, it appears as though Liverpool could have an awful lot to do in 2025 with apparent needs at striker, defensive midfielder, left back, and centre half—and that's without touching on the likely need to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold.

At centre half, on paper there's talent in current quartet of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Jarrell Quansah, and Joe Gomez. Even if Van Dijk re-signs as most expect he eventually will, though, he isn't getting any younger and Gomez' injury record remains concerning.

Now, the rumour mongers in Spain have the Reds eyeing up a push to beat Barcelona to the signing of Jonathan Tah in the summer, with the 29-year-old Bayer Leverkusen centre half on an expiring deal and free to change clubs at the end of the current campaign.

Tah has played 40 games this season for Leverkusen and is a regular starter for the German national team, though his age and profile seem to make him an awkward fit for the Reds—a player who would expect starting minutes without being a long-term solution.

Still, that hasn't stopped Mundo Deportivo and others in Spain from casting the Reds—as well as Tottenham Hotspur—as looming competition for Barcelona in the race to sign the player on a free. And Tah is a player who would improve any side he signed for.

We'll be curious to see over the coming weeks, then, if there's actually anything to this story—and if there is, what it might mean for Liverpool's four current centre halves on the depth chart given at least one would have to move on to make room should he arrive.
