Rumour Mongering: Madrid Abandon January Pursuit of Alexander-Arnold
Today at 09:01 AM
Fear not, fans of exhausting transfer sagas, the claims in Spain still have Real Madrid confident of signing the Liverpool right back for next season.
As December turned to January and 2024 ticked over to 2025, a tsunami of transfer stories struck out of Spain claiming Real Madrid were not only confident of signing Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold come summer but were stepping up their efforts to bring him in in January.
A season-ending injury to starting fullback Lucas Vázquez late in the autumn was behind the push to get Alexander-Arnold in early for Los Blancos, and it fuelled the chatter. Now, though, we're two weeks into January; half way through the transfer window. And things have gone rather quiet.
With that as the background, Relevo now suggest Madrid have in fact given up on any hopes of signing Alexander-Arnold early, having accepted both that Liverpool would be highly resistant to sanctioning a mid-season sale and the player himself would never push for such a move.
Liverpool are also said to have not entirely given up hope of convincing the 26-year-old playmaker to sign a new deal—though given we're talking about Spanish speculation here, Madrid are said to remain confident that Alexander-Arnold sees his playing future at the Spanish capital.
While for Liverpool it seems good news, at least in the short term, a January departure for the player never seemed likely and so assuming the latest chatter out of Spain of Madrid backing off a potential January move for the right back are true, it's hard to read much into it beyond that.
