Liverpool are top of the Premier League and Champions League tables and next take on Southampton for a place in the League Cup semi finals.

A relatively difficult start to the month of December has seen Liverpool drop points in the league against Newcastle and Fulham, but Arne Slot's Reds remain in pole position top of the Premier League table after 15 rounds.

They're also top of the new-look league phase table in the Champions League and head into a League Cup tie with relegation-threatened Southampton looking to book a place in the semi-final of England's second cup competition.

"I think that it is normal for Liverpool to be fighting for every trophy and to be for a long time in every cup," Slot noted ahead of kickoff. "This happened last season when this club won this competition, so I'm not surprised.

"With the quality we have, we are competing at the moment for three trophies and the fourth one is starting in January. But it is a challenge and with the teams that are in it it's not going to be an easy road to get to the final."

This week's other League Cup quarter finals see Arsenal taking on Crystal Palace today before a pair of Wednesday games when Newcastle host Brentford and Tottenham welcome Manchester United to North London.

In January when they join the FA Cup it is for the Third Round with a home date against Accrington Stanley set for January 11th. Should they make it, the League Cup semi is a two-legged affair January 6th and February 3rd.

"It's always been my philosophy since I'm a manager to try to win every game," Slot added. "But it's also our players that have this same mentality before I came here. It's the mentality of the club; the mentality of the players."
