Liverpool got the better of Lille on Tuesday evening to secure their place in the last-16 of the Champions League.

The Reds cannot yet proclaim themselves to have won the League Phase, after Barcelona snatched a late winner over Benfica.

However, Liverpool’s seventh win out of seven means they will definitely be in the competition’s final 16.

It was not an easy game against Lille, who came to Anfield unbeaten since September.

After Mohamed Salah put the Reds into a first-half lead and Aissa Mandi saw red for the French side, it looked as though Liverpool would stroll to a win.

But although Jonathan David did then get a surprise equaliser, Harvey Elliott soon hit back to put Liverpool ahead again. And after catching the eye with his celebration of Darwin Nunez’s late double on Saturday, Federico Chiesa was at it again straight after the goal.

Elliott’s goal was clearly not as big a moment as Nunez’s at Brentford.

Liverpool were already virtually qualified for the knockout stage of the Champions League, and dropping points at Anfield on Tuesday wouldn’t have changed that.

Nevertheless, it was a huge deal for Elliott. His first ever home goal in Europe’s top competition and after a difficult period for the youngster, it clearly meant a lot.

And Chiesa obviously recognised this, racing straight onto the pitch to celebrate with Elliott.

With the No.19 executing a good knee slide on the Anfield turf, Chiesa was immediately there, embracing the goal scorer.

Displaying a smile as wide as the Mersey, it was great to see the Italian throwing himself right into the thick of it once again.

How did Chiesa play when he came on?

Although this was great to see from Chiesa again, Liverpool fans want to see the 27-year-old out on the pitch.

As a result, it was superb to see Fede get a little longer on Tuesday, with Slot bringing him on with around 15 minutes to go.

And what was even better was that even though it was again a relatively short period, Chiesa made an impact.

Driving at the Lille defence from the left this time, the No.14 was direct and – as we’ve seen before – desperately trying to get a shot away at every opportunity.

After a difficult few months for Fede, he is clearly settling in both on and off the pitch.
