Virgil van Dijk: "It Could Have Been A Lot Worse"

The captain gave his honest assessment of the disappointing draw against Manchester United on Sunday.
It's over and done, Manchester United came to Anfield and stole a point through our own weaknesses. The weather may have paid a decent part in the match as well, with snow piled on the touchlines and rain coming down in buckets, but the squad played without real focus and were punished for it twice by Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo.
Captain Virgil van Dijk even showed rare moments of frustration after the second goal went in, and looked to be trying to get some players back in the match. They were able to keep the visitors from winning the three points, but there are still things to learn from as we continue to march towards the hopeful title.
"It could have been a lot worse if we are absolutely honest with ourselves," Van Dijk said following the match.
"They had a big chance in the end that could have been a lot worse than where we are now. I'm definitely disappointed with dropping points at home but it is what is and we have to move on and we will.
"We found the 2-1 and then it is about trying to manage the game and keep the ball for longer than three and four passes.
"We lost the ball too easily at times and then we were more open than we should have been. We're not perfect, we're still learning and we have to learn from this as well."
Thankfully there is still a gap between Liverpool in first place and Arsenal in second place, and the Reds still have a game in hand, but van Dijk put any title talks to bed.
"We look at the next game, we don't look at the league table," the captain asserted.
Liverpool have a short break from the league in the coming week, facing Tottenham in the League Cup on Wednesday, and Accrington Stanley on Saturday, so plenty of time to give some starters a rest and hopefully get some heads back in the right place before facing (checks calendar)... oh right, Nottingham Forest in the league.
Not all is lost right now, it's only five days into the new year.
