Liverpool were far from their best against Wolves at Molineux on Saturday.

The Reds have been really good of late, winning three games on the spin to put themselves in an excellent position in all three competitions this season.

But things took a bit of a turn towards a ‘Nottingham Forest’ type performance for Liverpool at Molineux as they looked unrecognisable from the team that blew West Ham away on Wednesday.

The match hit a low-point for the Reds early into the second-half. Having got themselves into a slightly underserved lead through Ibrahima Konate, they allowed Wolves back into the game.

The goal was all of Liverpool’s own making. Andy Robertson failed to cut out the pass, Konate waited for Alisson to come but he never did, and the home side nicked it and eventually scored.

It was an incredibly poor one to concede at a time where Liverpool had looked comfortable. And watching the game for Sky Sports, Gary Neville was far from impressed.

Having been ahead and comfortable, this was the worst kind of goal for Liverpool to concede at Wolves.

With the Midlands side bottom of the Premier League heading into the game, confidence was noticeably low in the stands.

But the goal – which Rayan Ait Nouri bundled home – was exactly the lift they needed.

From Neville’s point of view, it came from the Reds being far too comfortable in their approach after going ahead.

And while commentating for Sky Sports, the former Manchester United right-back admitted he could not believe what he’d seen from Konate.

“Look at Konate, what is he doing?!” blasted Neville. “Then Alisson gets caught out of his goal. It’s scrappy.

“That’s what you get in football if you take things for granted. It’s just complacency.”

Who was to blame for Wolves equaliser?

This is not the first time we’ve seen a mix-up like this at the back at exactly the wrong time for Liverpool.

Last season’s game against Arsenal at the Emirates springs to mind as the most high-profile example.

On that day, it was more Alisson to blame than Virgil van Dijk. And against Wolves, we’d unfortunately point the finger at the goalie rather than Konate here.

The £35m centre-back was justified in thinking that Alisson should have taken charge. Had the Brazilian come out proactively, he would have surely claimed the ball comfortably.

Konate was not blameless – he could have cleared it as soon as it became clear that Alisson was not coming. But this was on the ‘keeper for us. Either way, Liverpool went straight up and went back ahead and stayed there. So, ultimately, it’s a moot point.
