Where Darwin Nunez now ranks on Liverpool's all-time top scorers list after goal against Southampton

Liverpool beat Southampton on Wednesday to book their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
The Reds are on track to defend the trophy they won last season under Jurgen Klopp after coming through a tough game at St Mary’s.
Liverpool were helped along their way by a rare goal for Darwin Nunez, who pounced on a Jan Bednarek error to put the Reds 1-0 up after 24 minutes.
It was just the fourth time Nunez has found the back of the net for Liverpool this season.
And while the 25-year-old will certainly want to add to that tally, he is steadily moving up the list of top scorers in Liverpool history.
Nunez’s goal against Southampton was his 37th for the Reds and lifted him above two players in the all-time charts.
Darwin Nunez closing in on top 80
There’s little question that Nunez should have scored more for Liverpool since arriving in 2022.
The Uruguayan has now had plenty of time to settle in at Anfield and having been given the No.9 shirt in 2023 should be taking more responsibility as a goal scorer.
Nevertheless, he is slowly chipping away at the all-time list for Liverpool.
While teammate Mohamed Salah has designs on breaking into the top three this campaign, Nunez is focusing his sights a fair bit lower.

His strike past Alex McCarthy moved the former Benfica man above Fred Howe, who played for Liverpool in the 1930’s and Cyril Done who was on the books from 1946-1952.
With both Howe and Done on 36 goals apiece, Nunez left them in his wake to move up to 81st on the list, level with 1980’s squad player Paul Walsh.
How high could Nunez reach this season?
There have been suggestions that Nunez could be sold in the summer if he cannot nail down a spot in the starting XI.
As a result, the next five months or so could be his last chance to get as high on this list as possible. Realistically, it’s certainly possible that Nunez could still score another 7-10 goals this season.
Player | Goals | Appearances | All-Time Ranking |
Mohamed Salah | 227 | 372 | 5 |
Diogo Jota | 61 | 157 | 41 |
Darwin Nunez | 37 | 117 | 81 |
Luis Diaz | 33 | 120 | 93 |
Cody Gakpo | 32 | 103 | 97 |
That would need him to buck up his ideas in the second half of the campaign but given that Darwin has underperformed so far, we think that’s still possible.
Nunez needs five more to better modern-day hero Divock Origi’s tally of 41, with Origi currently sitting 71st in the rankings. Peter Crouch sits one goal and three spots higher in 68th.
Should Nunez go all out and equal his 18-goal haul from 2023/24, he would shoot up the standings to 56th place. If he can do that, maybe he’ll still be around to move even higher next season.
