'Why not': £50m Liverpool player admits he has his eye on a first Premier League Golden Boot this season

Liverpool have been free-scoring during the early games of life under Arne Slot.

Five matches into the Premier League season, and only Man City and Chelsea have scored more than the Reds’ tally of ten.

Throw in three goals in the Champions League and five in the Carabao Cup, and Liverpool’s fearsome attack is already cooking up something special.

Surprisingly, Mohamed Salah is not the top scorer in the Liverpool squad five games into the league season.

Salah has been the man with the most goals in each one of his seven Premier League seasons at Anfield, sharing the honour with Sadio Mane in 2018/19.

This time, though, Luis Diaz has come out swinging to better Salah five goals to three. And the Colombian has set himself some lofty ambitions on the back of that excellent start.

Luis Diaz makes Golden Boot admission

The Premier League Golden Boot has ended up on Salah’s magical left foot three times so far.

As well as the joint award with Mane and Aubameyang in 2019, the Egyptian shared the gong with Heung-Min Son in 2022 after winning it outright in 2018.

Only Thierry Henry has been the Premier League’s top scorer on four separate occasions and Mo will have his eye on that having started well.

However, just five games in and Man City’s Erling Haaland looks ready to make it a non-contest again, scoring a ridiculous 10 times already.

Despite that – and Salah’s own ambitions – Diaz has told Sky Sports that he is hoping to make a splash alongside the division’s top scorers this season.

“It’s really good to be there,” admitted the 27-year-old, when asked about his position as joint second top scorer.

“I am always trying to improve, so seeing myself up there right now, that is what I work for. That is what we play football for.

“Why not?” Diaz added when questioned if he has eyes on the Golden Boot. “I hope I can be one of the Premier League’s top scorers. Now, it’s about continuing this good start, keeping my feet on the ground, staying calm and enjoying it.”

Can Luis Diaz keep up goal-scoring form?

Slot has openly admitted that Diaz should have scored more last season. His final tally of eight Premier League goals was disappointing.

Nevertheless, it was his best haul in a Liverpool shirt. Yes, that included half a season in 2021/22 and an injury-hit campaign a year later, but Diaz still only scored four league goals in each of those seasons.

This time, Liverpool’s No.7 has already bettered that. Keep up this current rate and he will be on for 20+.

In a world without Haaland, that would undoubtedly put Diaz in with a chance of the Golden Boot. But given the Norwegian’s tally so far, only injury will prevent him from hitting 30 goals or more.

Diaz can only focus on himself, though, and while we’d be surprised to see him turn into a goal-scoring machine, it seems as though he has the taste for it. Go for it, Lucho!
