Liverpool are set to be active in the transfer market in the upcoming windows and wheels are already in motion to fine-tune their squad.

The Reds were frugal spenders in 2024, but that is unlikely to be the case this year as Arne Slot aims to imprint his philosophy at the club.

In recent weeks, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been linked with a move to Liverpool, with the Reds viewing the Georgian as a market opportunity midway through the season.

However, with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future uncertain and the Reds still on the lookout for an alternative to Martin Zubimendi, they can kill two birds with one stone by making a move for Joshua Kimmich.

After Zubimendi rejected a move to Anfield, the Reds refrained from pursuing alternatives, instead opting to use Ryan Gravenberch as a number six.

And while that decision has already paid dividends, Liverpool still need another player in that position as the Dutchman can’t play every game.

Real Madrid’s interest in Alexander-Arnold is another issue for the club, with his future very much hanging in the balance as his contract runs out next month.

Ideally, Liverpool would need a central midfielder and a right-back to solve these issues, but with Kimmich, they could be getting both.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Liverpool are interested in signing Kimmich on a free transfer, although Bayern remain locked in talks to tie him down to a new deal.

The German international is one of the most decorated players of his generation and has been an indispensable asset for Bayern since joining the club from RB Leipzig.

Capable of playing right-back and in central midfield, Kimmich would be the dream signing for Liverpool, more so on a free transfer.

Julian Nagelsmann described Kimmich as a ‘world-class’ player and with the Reds on the lookout for players who could add real value to their squad, the German’s versatility could add another dimension to their existing options.

What next for Kimmich?

After spending the lion’s share of his senior career with Bayern, Kimmich could be tempted to try a new challenge, which was exactly the case with Thiago Alcantara when the Reds snapped him up in the summer of 2020.

He is one of the most unique players in world football and is hardly ever injured, making him a reliable option despite the fact that he is currently 29.

Kimmich is one of the fittest players in world football and has a lot of football left under his belt.

Liverpool have always been attentive to market opportunities, and judging by what’s happened so far with Kimmich, snapping him up on a free transfer would be too big an opportunity for the Reds to miss out on.
