It is well known that the rivalry between Liverpool and Man United is fierce.

England’s two biggest clubs have been doing battle with each other for decades with both institutions having their time at the top of the sport in the country.

The Reds dominated the 70s and 80s, while the 90s and 00s belonged to the Manchester outfit. The present-day sees the Merseyside club on top, with Ruben Amorim’s men looking up at Arne Slot’s side from down in 13th position in the Premier League standings.

Former Liverpool and Man United stars are littered across lists when it comes to the greatest players to ever play in England, but when it comes to praising each other, it has not often been seen.

That has changed within the modern media sphere and Denis Irwin has admitted that the is a fan of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Denis Irwin likens Trent Alexander-Arnold to David Beckham

Alexander-Arnold is without a doubt a generational talent and is one of the best full-backs in the sport at present.

There is a reason Real Madrid want Alexander-Arnold at their club and Irwin understands this with the Man United legend labelling the defender the “modern full-back” despite his flaws from a defensive point of view.

David Beckham is a fan of Alexander-Arnold and speaking on the latest episode of Stick to Football, Irwin has likened the former Man United midfielder to the Liverpool full-back, which is a compliment the the 26-year-old will certainly accept.

"Well, I think he's David Beckham-esque in his delivery, you've got to say that,” the Irishman said about Alexander-Arnold. “If you're looking at the full picture as well, you know as a full-back, you can see the whole picture and his delivery is as good as I've seen anybody in the game, it really is.”

When asked about the 26-year-old’s defence skills, Irwin said: "You question that but that's the modern-day full-back, isn't it? United had kind of got at him last month, didn't they in that kind of area?

"He should learn as you grow up and get better defensively but just in terms of attacking, he's a modern-day full-back, isn't he, he loves to go forward. And if you're playing for anybody in the Premier League, you've got to be very comfortable on the ball now."

Roy Keane criticised Alexander-Arnold for his display for Man United earlier this month as the Liverpool defender had a shocker at right-back in the 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Beckham is a great comparison when looking at similarities to Alexander-Arnold as both have wands for a right foot.

How does Alexander-Arnold compare to David Beckham?

The obvious trait that makes this comparison between Alexander-Arnold and Beckham viable is their right feet.

The technical ability the duo have is not of this world with their ability to put a pass or a cross exactly where they want it to go.

Both Englishmen have shown to be lethal from set pieces, whether that be a corner or a free kick, with opposition players showing fear in the past when each player has been stood behind a dead ball.

Beckham often played at right-midfield in a 4-4-2 at Man United, therefore, the Red Devils legend was expected to do his defensive work.

Just like Alexander-Arnold that was never the midfielder’s strong aspect of the sport, but despite this, Beckham is remembered as a great and so will Liverpool’s current vice-captain.
