The Stats Ahead of the Big Weekend Match

Manchester City take on Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, hoping to maintain their 100% league record against their title rivals. The Blues are top of the table, with the Gunners just two points behind in second place.

Sunday's match will be the 98th time that City and Arsenal have faced each other in the league in Manchester, however, it has not always been in the guise that it is today.

On 30th December, 1893, Ardwick took to the pitch to face Woolwich Arsenal for the first time in the north and it was a match that Arsenal won 1-0. The next fourteen matches saw the newly named Manchester City take on Woolwich Arsenal, with the Blues winning seven and losing just three times.

The two have faced each other in the Premier League 27 times in Manchester, both at Maine Road and the Etihad Stadium. City failed to win any of the first nine meetings between January 1993 and May 2006. The Blues lost all but one match - a 0-0 draw in January 1994. After that less-than-perfect start against the Gunners, City are now unbeaten in their last nine matches at home, winning seven and drawing two. The other nine matches in between have seen City win five and Arsenal three, with a 1-1 draw in 2012 sandwiched between them.

City's biggest win at home to Arsenal is 6-3 in December 2013, but the biggest winning margin was the Blues 5-0 thumping of Arteta's side in August 2021. The Gunners recorded their biggest win at City in February 2003 when a Thierry Henry masterclass resulted in a 5-1 win for Arsenal and applause from the City fans as the Frenchman was substituted. That wasn't the first time Arsenal had put five past City at Maine Road - in November 1925, Arsenal won 5-2 at City's new stadium to end a run of six matches without a win at City.

City and Arsenal have met 19 times in the month of September in Manchester, with City winning nine of those matches. The last time they met on 22nd September was 1951 when Arsenal won 2-0, however, they have also met and that date in 1928, when City ran out 4-1 winners.

Last season's goalless draw was the first time both sides failed to score since January 1994 and was only the eighth goalless draw between the two sides in Manchester. That was City's fourth clean sheet in five Premier League matches at home to Arsenal and the Gunner's first since 2015, when Arsenal won 2-0.

There have been 83 goals in this fixture in the Premier League era, with City just edging Arsenal, scoring 44 while the Gunners have managed 39. Last season's draw was a blip between the two sides and there are usually goals shared out. How many will hit the back of the net on Sunday?
