Sergio Gómez spent two years at Manchester City before leaving them for Real Sociedad last summer.

The 24-year-old was part of the Citizens’ treble winning squad in his debut season, but didn’t enjoy regular minutes. He was the only recognised left-back at the Etihad, however, Pep Guardiola still favoured others ahead of him.

Gómez clocked in 1,411 minutes from 38 matches for Manchester City over two seasons and decided to leave to enjoy regular minutes.

Saturday’s edition of AS covers comments made by the defender, where he talked about his Manchester City exit. They asked the fullback if he was ‘predestined’ to meet the Spanish club.

“When I was informed of Real’s interest… I always told my family and my agents that I liked the club, that they had a similar profile to mine, and I liked their values, the game. I had spoken to [Roberto] Olabe a few times and I liked what he told me,” he said.

In 2024, the player left Manchester City for La Real, won the Olympic Gold with Spain and made his senior debut for the national team in October. The newspaper asked him to review his action packed last year, and he spoke about the move.

“Yes that’s how it is. You are practically in the best club in the world, and although you know that it can be difficult to play, you see that you have possibilities, and you feel like trying,” Gómez explained.

“But you want minutes and that’s why Real’s interest came at the right time. Then the Games also helped me gain confidence and the start with Real was also good, to the point that thanks to it they called me up to the national team.”

The Spaniard’s teammate, Martín Zubimendi, has been linked to Manchester City. Two months ago, Cope reported the midfielder’s €60m clause isn’t an obstacle for Guardiola’s side and their interest in him won’t be ‘diluted easily’.

On December 30th, AS said Real Madrid will have to fight with both Manchester City and Liverpool to sign Zubimendi.

Gómez has now encouraged his compatriot to snub his former club.

“He’s much better at Real Sociedad than at Manchester City. I’ve already told you, it’s not that big of a deal,” he added.
