Graeme Souness has labelled Alejandro Garnacho a ‘wrong’un’ and said the Manchester United winger has ‘no chance’ of succeeding under Ruben Amorim if he doesn’t buck his ideas up.

Garnacho started United’s first two games under new boss Amorim, even scoring in the opener in their Europa League win over Bodo/Glimt in late November.

However, the Argentine has started just two further times in the subsequent nine appearances in all competitions in a clear sign that he has fallen out of favour under Amorim.

Alongside Marcus Rashford, Garnacho was left out of the matchday squad for the Manchester derby and while he has since returned to the squad, the 20-year-old has only been used sparingly off the bench.

Having made 50 appearances in all competitions last season, Garnacho’s future at Old Trafford now appears to be in a state of flux, with reports even suggesting that his representatives have begun sounding out moves for him in January.

But Souness has little sympathy for Garnacho’s current situation at United and said the winger has only himself and his attitue to

‘I spoke last week about the example Bruno Fernandes sets and I hear about Alejandro Garnacho being unhappy with the manager. Can someone remind me of just who he is?,’ the Liverpool legend wrote in his Daily Mail column.

‘The last time I looked he was only a 20-year-old boy. One who is only one step up, on a ten-rung ladder. Who are you?

‘He acts like a ‘wrong ‘un’ on the football pitch and, unless he changes, he’s got no chance of fulfilling what obvious potential he has.’

Souness continued: ‘Premier League teams are forced into paying fortunes to kids because, if they don’t, someone else will.

‘But you’re only ever investing in potential, and more often than not when you give a young man too much too soon they get in their armchair and never fulfil their potential.’

Speaking after dropping Garnacho from United’s matchday squad, Amorin said he was pleased with how the winger had responded in training.

‘Trained really well. He seems a little bit upset with me and that is perfect,’ he said earlier in the month.

‘I was really, really happy because I would do the same and he is ready for this game. So we’ll see in the end of this training.’

But Garnacho is still yet to return to the starting XI and that trend is likely to continue when United travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday.

Amorim’s side are looking to avoid their fifth successive defeat in all competitions but face a tall order up against Arne Slot’s in-form Reds.
