Losing to West Ham United was the final straw for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United after a poor start to the season in both the Premier League and Europa League.

There’s been a distinct issue with scoring goals, and even on the occasions the Red Devils has gone through good form in matches they’ve struggled to find the back of the net and underline any dominance.

When announcing that Ten Hag had left the club, Manchester United stated Ruud van Nistelrooy would be in charge whilst a permanent manager was located and secured.

Now it appears that process is going more quickly than many expected. The Athletic reported on Monday evening that Rúben Amorim is the top candidate and there’s a willingness to pay his €10m release clause and take him from Sporting CP.

RTP is Portugal’s equivalent of the BBC and certainly not one to indulge in transfer rumours, and they’re reporting tonight – crucially according to their own information – that Amorim is the favourite.

They’re saying the clause is €20m.

Perhaps the discrepancy is related to when the clause is activated.

Sporting CP have won all nine games they’ve played in Liga Portugal this season. They sit top, having scored 30 goals and conceded two.
