Manchester United were monitoring goalkeeper Diogo Costa during Porto’s 2-1 Primeira Liga win over Famalicao on Friday, according to Record.

The Red Devils have had a disappointing Premier League campaign. They have picked up only 38 points from 32 games thus far.

The club are into the Europa League semi-final after a dramatic 7-6 aggregate win over Lyon and could still end the season on a high.

Irrespective of this, manager Ruben Amorim may want to bolster his squad in the summer, and a new goalkeeper could be pursued.

Andre Onana has made eight errors leading to goals from the start of last season. He could be replaced during the next transfer window.

Record now claim that United were keeping tabs on Costa, who they seem to be interested in.

United unlikely to make a huge outlay on Costa

The Red Devils are currently close to breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules, and part of the summer spending spree could depend on player sales.

A marquee striker could be targeted with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to impress. They have bagged just six league goals this season.

A central midfielder, a right wing-back and an attacking midfielder could also be signed.

With this in mind, we don’t see United making a significant outlay on Costa, who has a £64 million release clause in his existing contract at Porto.

The 25-year-old is a modern goalkeeper with many strengths. He is good with the ball at his feet and has not made an error leading to a goal this term.

The Portuguese star has also impressed with his ability to command the box with high claims when required. He would be a good upgrade on Onana for United.

However, the price tag could be problematic. Porto could be unwilling to negotiate on the fee, considering he is at the peak phase of his career.

In our view, United are more likely to pursue a cheaper alternative. Espanyol’s Joan Garcia would be a superb bargain buy for the number one role.

Arsenal have a long-term interest in the Spaniard and see him as a deputy to David Raya. United could persuade him to join with regular game time.
