Man Utd player ratings vs Ipswich: Four stars let Ruben Amorim down on debut
Today at 01:27 PM
Ruben Amorim did not get the dream start to life as Manchester United boss he desired with his side settling for a draw against Ipswich Town on his Premier League debut.
The visitors took an early lead through Marcus Rashford but as has been the case again and again this season,United wilted after scoring to invite the opposition back into the game.
Omari Hutchinson netted a spectacular effort from range on the stroke of half-time with United struggling to make anything of real note in the second-half.
With players adapting to a new manager, a new system and new demands, Metro hands out our player ratings.
Andre Onana: 8
Good save early on to deny Sammie Szmodics – raised the bar with an astonishing stop to deny Liam Delap from close range with a Save of the Season contender. Could do nothing about Hutchinson’s strike but denied Delap again early in the second-half.
Noussair Mazraoui: 7
A quiet afternoon but looked relatively at ease in yet another new role as part of a back three. Was the most mobile of that trio, getting through plenty of work.
Matthjis de Ligt: 5
A tough afternoon at the heart of defence. Was too slow getting out and then getting back into position and struggled in his duels with Delap.
Jonny Evans: 4
Perhaps the United player who struggled most with the formation switch today. While he has shown he is still a fine operator this season, his lack of recovery pace was an issue at Portman Road.
Amad Diallo: 7
Instant impact in that right wing-back role, brilliantly combining with Fernandes before racing down the flank to perfectly tee up Rashford for his opener. Did his best to contribute down the other end, making a couple of important clearing headers in the first-half but was too easily beaten by his man for the Delap chance.
Christian Eriksen: 4
Like Casemiro, didn’t have the legs for the midfield battle with the first-half completely passing him by.
Casemiro: 4
Instructed to press but was comfortably beaten in the middle of the park by Ipswich players, Hutchinson in particular, who turned him again all too easily for the Ipswich equaliser. Replaced 10 minutes into the second-half.
Diogot Dalot: 4
Largely anonymous down the left and didn’t look at ease in the rare moments he was freed high up the pitch, left one-on-one and wasting a superb chance midway through the first-half.
Bruno Fernandes: 6
Involved in the opener, part of a brilliant one-two with Amad that released the Ivorian to cause havoc. Got through plenty of work and was United’s most inventive player in the second-half but couldn’t craft the opening.
Alejandro Garnacho: 5
A quiet afternoon in a new role – found space on occasion but struggled to have any real impact. Wasteful on the counter, should have done better when freed through on goal in the first-half but Axel Tuanzebe too easily caught up with him.
Marcus Rashford: 6
Scored the first goal of the Ruben Amorim era but seldom involved beyond that.
Substitutes
Manuel Ugarte: 5
Brought onto replace Casemiro after 55 minutes with United seeing more of the ball after his introduction.
Luke Shaw: 4
Brought on for Evans after 55 minutes to make his first appearance of the season. As can be expected, looked very off the pace.
Rasmus Hojlund: 4
Brought on for Rashford after 67 minutes but was completely anonymous, too hesitant to shoot when a rare chance did come his way.
Joshua Zirkzee: 4
Brought on for Eriksen after 67 minutes – pressed well in one of those attacking roles supporting Hojlund but was responsible for quite a horrible effort on goal after 76 minutes, ballooning a dismal shot over the bar under no pressure.
Mason Mount: N/A
Brought on for the final five minutes to replace Garnacho, no time to have an impact.
