Premier League footballer Axel Tuanzebe required surgery after cutting his hand while washing the dishes in a kitchen accident, according to reports.

Manchester United supporters will be well aware of Tuanzebe, who spent 17 years at the club, before he departed in the summer of 2023 by joining Ipswich Town.

Tuanzebe was absent from Ipswich’s 4-1 defeat to West Ham on Saturday, though, after he came close to losing his thumb in an unusual incident.

The 26-year-old was doing the washing up when a glass smashed, and after one of the shards deeply lacerated his hand, he required emergency medical attention.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, and while it is not yet known when Tuanzebe may return, Ipswich’s manager hinted on Saturday that he may be out for months.

‘He’s done a hand injury, a very unfortunate accident,' Kieran McKenna said. ‘He’s had surgery and will be out for a while.

‘It’s not going to be a couple of weeks, probably longer. There are still discussions with the specialists.

‘He’s naturally a miss with the way he’s started the season. He’s going to be out for a little while. We’re going to have to adjust and regroup as a team.’

Tuanzebe has established himself as an important player for Ipswich since their promotion to the top-flight.

The Congo international defender, a former England U21, started all six of Ipswich’s Premier League matches before his freak injury.

The Tractor Boys have endured a mixed start to the season and are still waiting for their first Premier League victory after seven fixtures.

McKenna, though, will be no doubt delighted that his side currently sit outside of the bottom three given that many pundits and fans have tipped them to go down.

Ipswich host Everton at Portman Road in their next match, which is on October 19 after the international break.
